While many of the folks who got caught up in the Blizzard of 2010 spent their time thinking about how nice it was to be off work or school, Wen McNally used the time to build her business – big time – on Facebook.
I’ve long been fan of Wen’s incredible portrait photography. Hers is a family enterprise, with husband Sean sharing business duties. They have a unique sense of marketing on a shoestring, and a knack for taking advantage of all opportunities.
Case in point: Blizzard 2010.
On Friday, February 5th, Wen looked at the snow falling outside her window and knew that she wouldn’t be the only one snowed in. So she went on to the Facebook fan page for Wen McNally Photography and created “The Blizzard of 2010 Snowed-In Contest.”
Fans can vote on the senior portrait of their choice, and may cast up to 5 votes. The first place winner wins a $100 gift card to the store of their choice and a “poster session” with their friends. Second and third place winners win a mini-studio “Facebook Friend” session.
Of course, in order to have the ability to vote, you have to become a fan of Wen’s page.
The contest started three days ago; it ends at midnight tonight.
As of this writing, Wen has added more than 650 new fans to the page and gathered more than 2,000 comments.
650 new fans, all friends of the seniors featured in the contest.
650 new potential customers, who can now view Wen’s amazing work.
All it took was a little time, a $100 gift card, and an attitude that seeks out small opportunities rather than large obstacles.

Besides being a brilliant photographer, Wen really does an outstanding job connecting with potential customers through social media. In fact, she’s a pioneer for anyone who isn’t an Internet marketer, which is nearly all of us. Wen demonstrates how brick-and-mortar businesses should use social media.
Congratulations, Wen!
Way to go Wen!!!
I recently met Wen at a photographers convention in San Diego this past January and I would like to add that Wen is not only brilliant at marketing and photography but she has a wonderful personality, she’s creative and willing to share ideas and help others with their business. Thank You to my new friend!
Welcome to the blog, Charlene! Yes, Wen is the real deal. I keep threatening to show up on her doorstep for a photo shoot…
I met Wen a few years ago and she really knows what she is doing. I had the honor of getting to know her in San Diego this year and what makes her tick. She is surely an inspiration to me and so many others.
I’ve known Wen and Sean for several years now, and the amount of both insight and energy they have is amazing. This idea and how it’s taken off is no surprise to me, but very cool none the less!
I’m getting such a bonus, meeting all these friends of Wen & Sean. Hope you’ll stick around to read more!
I’ve gotten a chance to get to know when over the past couple of years through a professional photographer’s organization and must say she is very progressive and always full of great ideas! I love the fact that she’s very open and willing to share her successes with others. I’m glad to see that she’s expanding her horizons outside of the photographer network because her ideas have application for any business!
Thanks to all my peeps for saying such kind words. You all are the best! It is friends like you that make this industry such fun.
