The new Volvo S80 has taken its image of "driver safety" to a whole new level.
With the aid of a personal communicator, the driver is alerted if there’s a stranger in the car, before getting in. The car can actually detect a heartbeat.
Volvo claims this is but one piece of technology that stems from the YCC experiment a couple of years ago. They’ve been good to their word, incorporating ideas from women into future vehicles. And it’s interesting to note companies like Ford and GM, who previously pooh-poohed the idea, are all hot and heavy on the female driver topic.

The auto industry is giving itself a massive makeover not only in the products, but service as well. Jody DeVere told me this week that over 900 dealers have contacted her to learn about Ask Patty’s dealership training. (73% of those going through Service Centers are women) What a difference a year makes in awareness and action.
…who previously pooh-poohed the idea…
I seem to remember how “safety doesn’t sell” and that, no matter what, a Pinto must be under both 2000lbs and $2000. Who said that? Oh yeah, it was Lee Iococca, the guy who’s now selling a book telling us leadership means doing the difficult, costs and discomfort be damned.
I so want to strangle so many of my Xy brethren. While I’m sucking up, did you ever catch the ode to Boadicea and GM-style Chariots?

Hi Michele,
My 20 year old Volvo347 from new !…bit the dust this year (bodywork and Scottish winters outside).
Volvo leads the World in Safety …….for instance…….in 1944 the year I was born, Volvo came up with the Laminated windscreen (which cannot be penetrated by a baseball travelling at 100mph ! )….Fantastic you think ! ..yes………..but in 1974 the (so called ) uk USED IT’S VETO in Europe to PREVENT the same thing becoming Law in Europe ………..another reason why I believe in our forthcoming independence……life is worth more than gold !!
………and Michele, love what you do and believe me ” Mumsy” is soooooo proud and rightly so !! ………don’t have your new email but Mumsy has !!
Good Luck in all you do
