Intuition Part II

Thanks to our old friend the corpus callosum (See “Woman Does Not Live by Hormones Alone” 3/4/04), a woman has the advantage of being able to rapidly link and process information on both sides of the brain. With this “crossover” brainpower, she is pulling in all kinds of information from her surroundings. She is unconsciously accessing those file drawers of the right brain, tapping into emotional memories and feelings, sorting and looking for similarities and relationships to what she is presently encountering.

Drs. Ruben and Raquel Gur are pioneers in the field of neurological study and gender difference in the brain. They’ve issued numerous reports on studies performed in the Brain Behavior Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania-Philadelphia, and have found that because of a woman’s ability to capture a wide variety of external information, she is better at detecting different emotions in faces – a contributing factor to her intuitive nature. Women can identify an emotion and discriminate it from other facial expressions faster than men – sometimes even before realizing it’s a face!

It’s interesting to note that in one study testing how people read facial moods, men had a devil of a time detecting sadness in a woman’s face – they were correct only 70% of the time. Could this be part of the reason that men think women “start crying for no reason?”

corpus callosum… Never heard of it.. My will enjoy reading this ;) .
I have always said the politicians that end up at war because they’ve had enough of speaking are mostly men.
Women would notso quickly send their children to fight whereas men in general would.
I have always said women should be in control and men only fight when their mothers say so.
I think due to this corpus callosum you highlight I feel more “scientifically” correct than ever in regard to what ails the world so.
    Peace, J.

  2. My intuition has saved the day many a time. In fact, it’s so strong, I have people convinced I’m psychic. But, really, the ability to ‘read’ people just by the expression on their faces is not a learned process, as you so aptly said. I rely on my ability to ‘read’ a situation by observing body language and facial expressions, and I am seldom wrong. People just don’t know how transparent they are.

It is interesting that the comments above are mostly from women and that considerable emphasis is placed on reading faces. I am sure they are right. However much human action take place where no face can be seen and under that circimstance women would have no advantage. Warfare these days is most carried out at great distance where the enemy can not even be seen. If women are so intuitive why were the planes that hit the towers on 9/11 filled with approximately equal numbers of both men and women. Just how strong is this intuition? I will say this, when women are cheating on their husbands they are better at hiding it than the other way round. Women quite simply are better lyers and therefore should be trusted less, even though men may indeed play up more frequently than women.
